a few days in the life…

it feels like forever since i  updated, so this might be pretty random:

i finished the master cleanse. yes, i did! 10 days subsisting on lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. i felt weak for a lot of it, but maybe also because i was working long days a the studio with one emotional scene after the other. it near killed me and there were many times when i looked at the apples in the fruit basket and thought they looked like manna, but i held out. i finished with the soup and slowly got back onto regular food. i’m still eating pretty healthfully. for the most part, no bread, still haven’t had more than a few sips of coffee  (though i have rediscovered chai tea, which i unfortunately can’t drink without at least some milk) and eating loads of veggies and fruits with most lunches and dinners consisting of salads. so yay for me.

all in all i lost about 6.5kgs of which i gained back about 2.5 of water weight and let’s face it, decomposing matter in the innards that comes from a regular diet, before it stabilized. i’m also exercising again.

ooh, which reminds me! i had 2 exercise firsts this last week.

about 2 months ago i visited bounty hunters, one of my favorite places which happens to be just about 1km from my house. i call it the cat shop cos it smells of cat piss and almost instantly makes me sneeze, but it’s a charity shop which is a treasure trove of other people’s discards.  when i walked in i spotted a bicycle which was a little scratched up, but  seemed to be in pretty good nick. a carbon framed raleigh rc3000  microsoft racing bike which i could lift with one hand. i immediately called the bf who is a keen cyclist and he recommended that i buy it immediately. turns out i got it for a steal.

however, those of you who’ve read my blog before know that i had a slight head over heels episode on a bicycle when i was a teenager which resulted in a  probable concussion, so i’m leary. to say the least.

last sunday, i gathered up my courage and the bf and i headed out to diepsloot to ride. we’ve only been once and i still have to take the bike to be professionally set up for me and have cleats added, but i think this might be something i do for a while. it was fun and challenging and someday maybe soon, i’ll start free-wheeling on the downhills instead of desperately riding the brake in fear for my life.

sunday afternoon i went to check out my friend, lady lea rocking the decks at sunday sushi with pixie bennett and had a fabulous time.

lady lea rocking the decks!

i’m “on holiday” this week, though i’m basically running around getting stuff done that i don’t normally get the time to do. stuff  like getting the car registration discs (did you know you can do it at some post offices these days?) and taking the dogs to get their rabies vaccination (if you’re in jhb, please make sure you get your dogs vaccinated. there’ve been a few outbreaks with one toddler dead).

i’m so damned long-winded/don’t post often enough that i think i’ll save the rest of this update for another post. i’ll just add that i was lucky enough to get a VVIP ticket to the all-white h2o party this weekend  from lea and i’m so excited! i love day parties.

so, what have you been up to?

method to the madness…

those of you who’ve been reading my blog for a while, might have heard me mention the master cleanse.

it’s a 10 day lemon, cayenne pepper and maple syrup cleanse. yes, you drink only that concoction and water for 10 days. no, you do not eat any solid food. i’ve done it about 3 times for the full 10 days and a few more times for just a few days at a time. i thought it was fantastic when i first tried it, but i wouldn’t recommend it anymore because like any fast weight-loss program, unless you change your eating habits permanently, the weight will boomerang.

and i’m living proof.

ironically, when i finished survivor at the end of last year, i immediately employed a trainer because i didn’t want that extreme weight loss to come back triple fold. well, the irony was that i worked out harder than i ever have in my life, and got so much stronger, but i simply kept getting bigger and heavier. yes, a large part of it had to do with muscle, but also with the fact that i didn’t/couldn’t/refused to control my calorie intake.

so, much to my trainer’s annoyance, and mine, it was all in vain.

anyway, the point is that i have over the year slowly gotten so heavy that i got to weigh more than i ever have. the other thing is that i am currently filming a major story line during which my character, if she were me, would most certainly lose a fair amount of weight in a short time (even if only from the amount of crying she does!) and seeing that she’s using my body, i thought i should go method. you know, like when adrian brodie lost all that weight for “the pianist”, or robert de niro gained so much for ” raging bull”. or daniel day lewis insisted on being rolled around in a wheel-chair when he acted in “my left foot”.

so, much as i wouldn’t recommend it, today, monday, i started doing the master cleanse. i had a pre-cleanse day with only fruit, juice and salad yesterday and ironically the director this morning commented that it already looked like i’d lost weight.

anyway, i’ll keep you up to date on how it goes over the next while. i’m hoping that i’ll be able to make some kind of permanent change because i really need to. i feel like if i don’t change things now, i’m destined to be unfit and flabby for the rest of my life after being pretty fit for the first half, and beside the fact that a large part of my quite fabulous wardrobe no longer fits, that is just not an option.

LEMON DRINK for Master Cleanse

You’ll need:

2 TBsp lemon or lime juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)
2 TBsp genuine organic maple syrup, Grade B (the darker the better)
1/10 Tsp cayenne pepper, gradually increase (the more BTUs the better)
10-14 oz pure water

Combine juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper with water. Drink every 1 to 2 hours. Take no other food, but do drink lots of water in between lemonade drinks. *my modification is that i added psyllium husks to mine to add some roughage, but by day 5 i’d had enough*

Use fresh lemons or limes only, never canned or frozen lemon juice. Use organic and vine ripened when possible. Also, Mix your lemonade fresh just before drinking. Don’t mix it up in the morning for the whole day. You can, however, squeeze your lemons in the morning and measure out the 2 Tbls when needed.

Burroughs recommends a minimum of 10 days on this. You can do 40 days safely and more.

YL Clinic says you can use Agave instead of the maple syrup. Tom Woloshyn (who studied with Stanley Burroughs himself) disagrees. Clinic says if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia, use molasses. If you feel weak or have a sugar imbalance you can add a scoop of Power Meal. Or you can try Master Amino Acid Profile (MAP) for protein without any residuals or strain on the body more info here: http:/www.weightlossessentials.com/aminoacid.html

NOTE: Be sure to drink plenty of purified water in addition to the lemon juice.

GOING OFF LEMONADE FAST

First Day: Start with 4 oz. fresh squeezed orange juice mixed with 4 oz. water. If it goes well, drink several more 8 oz. glasses of fresh orange juice during the day. Sip slowly. Dilute with water if needed.

Second Day: Drink several 8 oz. glasses of orange juice during the day — with extra water, if needed.

In the evening make a vegetable broth (no canned soup). Use seasonal leafy and root vegetables such as: beets and beet tops, turnips and turnip greens, kale, carrots, onions, parsley, celery, potatoes, okra, one or two kinds of legumes, squash, beans, a little salt, cayenne pepper and dehydrated vegetables or veg. powder may be added for flavor (no MSG or hydrolyzed protein).

Cook lightly. Drink the broth, eating only a few bites of the vegetables.

Third Day: Orange juice in the morning. At noon have some more soup with some of the vegetables. No meat, fish, eggs, bread, pastries, tea, milk, or coffee. For Dinner, have the vegetables in the soup.

Fourth Day: Orange juice or lemon and maple syrup in the morning. Fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts for lunch. Salad or fruit for dinner.

Fifth Day: Eat normally but no junk food, dairy, tea, coffee, white flour or white rice, heavy animal proteins. If, after eating is resumed, distress or gas occurs, go back to the lemonade diet for a few days until the system is ready for food.

burning it off…

i’m going to burning man. (does maniacally  gleeful dance).

yes, i’m going to burning man. there are some old-school, longtime burners who have  written off the playa and are now venturing on to other realities. i understand that the annual burning man trek is a huge undertaking, which occupies most of the year and despite being a gifting community, ends up costing a not insubstantial amount of money. $2000 is not a bad guesstimate for what the average person spends on getting to burning man – and that’s if you live in the states. now take into account the burners who come from all the far-flung corners of the globe! a good friend of mine is spending well in excess of that coming from johannesburg.

having said all that – i am a 3-time burner, 2003-2005 and for two of those years, i was very involved in the fire community and spun fire the nights of  the burn. so let’s just say that i was very involved in the scene. in fact my last trip happened right after i started binnelanders. i actually flew back for 2 weeks in order to make my annual pilgrimage to the base of the man. since then i’ve never been in the states at the same time as the burn, so it’s been 4 years since i’ve been able to go.

thank heavens for the internet. i saw a post on one of my mailing lists earlier this year about a new conclave and i signed up via email, and because of my past experience  in the fire community, they’re allowing me to slot in with merely 2 rehearsals so i get to spin again on burn night and i get a discount on my ticket! yay!

however, once i started pulling my old performance wear out of the storage unit, it was abundantly (appropriate word) clear  that there was no way i was going to fit into most of it. this probably being my last time going to the burn in a while,  desperate measures were called for. remember how skinny beyonce suddenly was in “dreamgirls”? well, that was a result of something called the “master-cleanse”, a 10-day lemon, cayenne , maple syrup and water fast/cleanse (description and instructions below). well, i’m on day 7. my last day because i won’t be able to wean myself onto regular food in time for my trip if i go the full 10.

it was pretty uneventful except for the intense migraine which started on the evening of day 3 and went for about 18 hours. it was excruciating and  i was in bed by 8, but by the next night i was much better. most days i found it pretty difficult to finish the lemon drink and had to chug the remainder so that i could go to sleep. from day 4 onward, i started getting much more active – rode my bike a couple of miles. day 6 i got up and went for my first rollerblade in 18 months and then went for a 90 minutes yoga class. today, my last day, will end with a marathon dress rehearsal for the fire conclave, but i have no doubt i’ll be just fine.

i’m certainly looking better for it. i didn’t have a scale for the first 4 days and i seem to have not lost anything more the last 3, but i feel better and i’ve read somewhere that fasting actually can extend one’s life-span. i’m beginning to think that i need to institute a weekly monday water-fast, but i also realistically know that i have all kinds of good intentions when i’m doing the cleanse (this is my 3rd or 4th time), but they don’t always stick.

but i am going to look much better at burning man than i would have a mere week ago! 😉

confession…

forgive me father farther, i have SINNED. it’s been 7 days since my last confession run. that infernal devil injury to my hip has kept me from getting closer to you. but i REPENT. i am back in the fold. hallelujah! HALLELUJAH!

ok, so i don’t mean to offend anyone’s religious sensibilities, but that’s a little bit what it feels like. i’m just back from my first run in a week this morning. a very slow contemplative one in which i kept my stride length in check, monitored my hip and legs for any pain (ok so i might have ignored some of it), and got through 5k’s. and i confess. i liked it! (shhhh, don’t tell anybody!) 🙂

it feels so good to be moving again. especially since the fact that i couldn’t run, compounded by all the social wining and dining events lately, left me heavier than i’ve EVER been in my life (and no, the numbers on my scale are nobody’s embarrassing business, but mine!).

after threatening to do it all year, we finally had a day-long publicity shoot sprung on us yesterday, right when i’m feeling like jabba once again. i reluctantly had to resort to a 2-day master cleanse in order to look a little less like the michelin man. you start your day with a liter of salt water after which you’re glued to the white throne for the next hour and a half while it drains right through you. you then proceed to drink only a concoction of water, maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper for the rest of the day. rinse and repeat. for 10 whole days! (i’ve done the master cleanser a number of times before, and i  don’t recommend it. you look FANTASTIC after 10 days of near starvation and hell, but it completely screws up ones metabolism and pretty soon you’re piling it all back on).

venusmichelin.jpgthis image so perfectly illustrates how i’ve been feeling! at least the michelin man is losing some of his spare tyres and the venus is morphing. somewhat!
